About Dixon Park SLSC
Keeping Dixon Park Beach safe since 1932.
For over 90 years, Dixon Park has been more than a surf club—it's a community. Generations of locals have learned to save lives, built lifelong friendships, and contributed to something bigger than themselves on this stretch of Newcastle coastline.
We're volunteer-powered, community-focused, and proudly rooted in the belief that ordinary people can do extraordinary things when they step up together.
Who We Are
Dixon Park SLSC is a volunteer surf lifesaving club that keeps Dixon Park Beach safe, trains new lifesavers, runs programs for kids and families, and creates a space where people of all ages can belong.
We're parents and grandparents, teenagers and retirees, first-time volunteers and third-generation lifesavers. We're people who want to contribute, challenge themselves, stay active, and be part of something meaningful.
No one here gets paid. Everyone shows up because they choose to—because they care about this beach, this community, and each other.
That's been true since 1932, and it's still true today.
What We Do
For the youngest members, it starts in Nippers—learning water safety, building confidence, and making friends on the beach every Sunday morning.
For teenagers and adults, it's training to become lifesavers. Earning your Bronze Medallion, joining a patrol team, and knowing you're making a real difference every time you're on the beach.
For experienced members, it's expanding skills—IRB operations, advanced first aid, coaching, leadership roles, or competing in surf sports at club, state and national level.
For families, it's a place to connect. Weekends on the beach, club events, patrol barbecues, and being part of a community that genuinely looks out for each other.
For everyone, it's purpose. It's the knowledge that you're contributing to something that matters—keeping people safe, supporting your community, and being part of a legacy that stretches back over 90 years.
Why Dixon Park SLSC
-
This isn't an exclusive club or a business. It's a community organization where everyone pitches in, regardless of age, background or experience.
-
You'll find 8-year-olds training alongside 70-year-olds. Parents patrol with their adult children. Families who've been part of the club for decades welcome newcomers with open arms.
-
Every patrol, every training session, every Nippers program, every committee role—it's all run by locals who give their time because they believe in what we do.
-
Dixon Park SLSC was founded in 1932. We've been part of this coastline for over 90 years, adapting and evolving while staying true to our mission: save lives, build community, serve the beach.
-
We're always looking for new lifesavers, Nippers families, volunteers, and people who want to be part of something bigger. Whether you're 5 or 75, there's a place for you here.
How We’re Run
The club is governed by a volunteer committee elected annually by members. Our committee oversees operations, training, patrols, Nippers, surf sports, and community programs—all while maintaining transparency and accountability to our members.
Key club documents (constitution, policies, meeting minutes, annual reports) are available to members and the public.
Our History
We've been part of the Newcastle coastline since 1932—through world wars, cultural shifts, and countless changes to how surf lifesaving operates. But one thing has remained constant: locals stepping up to look after their beach and their community.
